Rev. & Mrs. Norman K. Hamby. 45 Years of Pastoral Service at the Rogers, AR church 1965 - 2010
Retired May 2010 and designated Pastor Emeritus.

A Short Biography of Norman K. Hamby

Pastor Norman K. Hamby was born in Turley, Oklahoma on May 15, 1938. He graduated from Tulsa Central High School in 1956. Being raised in a God-fearing home, he had the desire to attend Bible school, and he enrolled in the Apostolic Bible College in Tulsa, Oklahoma. He attended classes there in 1956 and 1957. Feeling his call to the ministry, he began preaching around in local churches, and received his Local Ministerial License from the United Pentecostal Church, Oklahoma District in 1957. Bro. Hamby met and fell in love with a beautiful young lady, Miss Judy Griggs. They were married on January 3, 1958. God blessed their marriage with two children, first a son, Russell, then a daughter, Renee. God blessed his ministry and he accepted the pastorate of the United Pentecostal Church in Quinton, Oklahoma in 1962 and pastored there until 1965.

Early picture of the couple

Rev. D. E. O’Brian, the pastor in Rogers, Arkansas, felt he wanted to start a new work, and Bro. Hamby was given the opportunity to try for the pastorate. The congregation voted him in as their pastor, and he took this position in December, 1965. He has been a faithful and successful pastor of this congregation for over forty years.

In April of 1967, Bro. Hamby became an Ordained Minister with the United Pentecostal Church, and that same year was voted in as the Arkansas District Conqueror’s Youth President. He held that position for eight years. He was appointed as Sectional Secretary in 1975 and later was elected as Sectional Presbyter, holding that position for two years. Bro. Hamby was then elected as the Arkansas District Sunday School Director in 1978 and was a successful leader for the next nineteen years. The General Board of the United Pentecostal Church appointed him as Director of their Boy Scouts of America and Canada in 1989, and he led that organization for twelve years, leaving that position in 2001.

When Bro. Hamby took the pastorate of the Rogers United Pentecostal Church, there were several families attending. Among them were: the Townsleys, (they were instrumental in founding the church in Rogers), Harrel and Betty Warren, James and Sandra Warren, the A.E. Bradley family, Charles and Margaret McCarley. Shortly after the Hamby’s took leadership, Bill and Carol McCarley became members of the congregation.

As the church grew over the years, Bro. Hamby used several men as Assistants to the Pastor. Among them were Rev. Larry Jones, Rev. Arnold Baughman, (pastor in Fayetteville, Arkansas), Rev. Mike Parmley, (pastor in Batesville, Arkansas), Tom McCarley, and Rev. David McBride, (pastor in Lincoln, Arkansas).

When Bro. Hamby took over the pastorate in Rogers, the church building was located at 924 South C Street. There was a small house behind the church that was used as the parsonage. In 1977, the church congregation had grown too large for the building and the parsonage was removed so the church building could be enlarged.

By 1978, the church building was full, so property was purchased for a new building at 2200 South 13th Street in Rogers. When the new building was completed, the church had a “Moving Parade” from the old church to the new one, led by a police escort with blue lights flashing!

The building erected in 1978 houses our Fellowship Hall, kitchen and Sunday School rooms. Our current sanctuary was built in 1985, and is almost at capacity.

As pastor of our church, Bro. Hamby has shown himself worthy of our respect and honor. He is always there to help and counsel. He has been faithful in bringing us the Word of God without fear or favor. He has performed many wedding ceremonies, baby dedications, baptisms and funerals over the last forty years.

Community Service

In 1998 Bro. Hamby was asked to sit on the Arkansas State Infant Mortality Review Board. He was a member of that board for two years.

Bro. Hamby was asked to become the Chaplain for the Arkansas State Police in 2003, and also became the Chaplain of the Benton County Sheriff’s Office with the rank of Captain. He currently holds both positions. As Chaplain of the Benton County Sheriff’s Department, Bro. Hamby has the job of counseling the inmates in the county jail. It is his job also to contact a family when a loved one is lost in an accident.

One of the best parts of his job as Chaplain is being able to witness to inmates about the Lord and to baptize many in the wonderful name of Jesus Christ.

At the annual Mayor’s Prayer Breakfast, Bro. Hamby was given a plaque by the Mayor for having attained the longest tenure as a pastor in the City of Rogers. We truly honor Bro Hamby for his faithfulness as a pastor and leader in this community.

She raised her two children in the nurture of the church, and is rewarded for it.
